"Small Works" at Artistree

At this time of year, there are many area exhibits that feature less expensive works for holiday gifting.  At Artistree in South Pomfret, VT, the current show is just that.  Interestingly, in addition to the framed paintings, the sculptures and ceramics, there is a special wall titled "50 @ 50" the idea being that there are fifty 7" x 7" panels, each of them available for purchase for $50.  Here is the wall as it looked earlier today.

Hmmmmm--I count 55 panels.  Below is my pen and ink drawing entitled "Ancient Tree"...

There is an exciting diversity of media and styles and over half of the panels have already been purchased though the show goes on until December 19th.  There was quite a rush to buy last Friday at the opening reception.  If you're in the neighborhood, stop by to see the show.  The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm or by appointment.

Art in the Round Barn

I was fortunate to be selected to show my paintings this year in Waitsfield, VT at the historic Round Barn.

Artists from Vermont, New England and beyond were selected from a pool of over 100 applicants and all art works are for sale.  The "Meet the Artists" Opening Reception was held yesterday, September 20 from 4 to 7 pm.  The barn is a lovely antique building and the food, the wine and the atmosphere were great....

These are the three paintings I exhibited this year...

...and here I am with fellow exhibiting artists, Helen Schulman and Sheryl Trainor...

...and Randall Gardiner whose work was hung next to mine.....

It's a lovely ride up to Waitsfield and if you're in the area, the show is open to the public September 21 through October 12, 10 to 5 on weekdays and 10 to 2 on weekends...

Vermont Welcome Center

This week I went south to Guilford, Vermont to the Welcome Center on I-91 to hang ten landscapes for the month of September.  The Center showcases the work of artists and crafts people and businesses from around the state.  Five panels hold my work in both oil and acrylic as you can see below....

I'll go back down at the end of the month to pick up my paintings, and hopefully between now and then many visitors traveling north on route 91 will have had the chance to see my work....

Noah's Art in Stonington, Connecticut

Today my husband and I drove to Connecticut to hang my work at Noah's Restaurant on Water Street in Stonington.  Thank you so much Rick for your gift off an entire day!  Noah's is a lovely place with wonderful food in a quaint and beautiful little town right on the water.
Here are some shots of the show as it looked when we were finished.

"September Hay Rolls"

"Shadow Ribbons I", "Densmore Hill" and "Shadow Ribbons II"

"Sap Buckets on Calendar Hill, "July Field, Randolph" and "Posted on Advent Hill"

In all, there are twenty-two drawings and paintings.  If you're in the neighborhood, stop buy for an excellent meal and a look at the art work!

"Oil and Water"

Yesterday, Sandy Waldo and I hung our exhibit of plein aire paintings in the Mezzanine Gallery at the Norman Williams Library in Woodstock, VT.  Sandy and I have been painting outdoors together for six years.  She paints in watercolor and I in oil--hence the title of the show, "Oil and Water".  Fortunately, we get along really well although the title implies some sort of difficulty!

Come to the library to see the exhibit during library hours and please plan to come to the Artist Reception April 25th from 4 to 6 pm.  The idea behind the show is that since we paint in the same place at the same time, we could show two different versions of the same scene--one in watercolor and the other in oil and here's an example.

The first is Sandy's watercolor of the view from Church Hill Road looking south into the South Woodstock hills...

“Early Spring”
watercolor - 9” x 12”

And this is my oil painting of the same view...

“Early Spring, South Woodstock”
oil - 11” x 14”

Not all of our painting match so neatly--some are of different views from the same spot and some are completely different paintings since one came out well and the other didn't!

Here are two more that we painted side by side at Silver Lake in Barnard....

“Silver Lake Reflection”
watercolor - 12” x 15”

"Sailboat on Silver Lake"
oil - 9" x 12"

We hope that our delight in the lovely, verdant landscape of Vermont will be enjoyed by all who visit the show.

"Creative Harvest"

“Creative Harvest” is the current show at the Norman Williams Public Library in Woodstock, VT.  It is a community art exhibit that features two-dimensional work in all media created by seventeen local artists.  It runs through this Thursday, November 14th in the Mezzanine Gallery and is open during library hours, Monday through Saturday 10 am to 6 pm.  This is my entry in the show:

"Summer on Locust Creek"
oil on canvas

Stop by and take a look--it's a great show!

Monday, October 7, 2013

It's been awhile....

Since I last posted there's been a lot of painting and showing going on.  Currently I have several paintings at Noah's Restaurant in Stonington, CT--a lovely spot on Water Street in a beautiful town on the coast.  Here's the first painting in the front window....

"July Field, Quechee"
30" x 40" - acrylic on canvas

Along the booth wall are three more, "Posted on Cobb Hill", "October Pasture" and "Sap buckets on Calendar Hill"....

And the paintings continue along the opposite wall:  "Swimming Hole on Locust Creek", "Densmore Hill" and "August Garden, Brookfield".  I think these plain aire frames set the paintings off nicely....

In all, there are 14 landscapes.  The show runs through October 27th, so if you're in southern Connecticut, stop by for a yummy seafood meal and take a look!

"Local Color" Exhibit at Artistree Gallery in Woodstock

It's that time of year up here in Vermont--leaf peeping time!  And in keeping with the season, Artistree Gallery hangs "Local Color" a fall exhibit of works by artists from the Upper Valley.  The three paintings I have entered are below.

The "Local Color" Opening is this Friday night, September 28th from 5:30 to 8 pm--and you're invited!

"Sailboat on Silver Lake"
9" x 12" plein aire oil painting

"Randolph Barns"
9" x 12" plein aire oil painting

"Twin Trees"
9" x 12" plein aire oil painting

Unfortunately, my photography skills leave something to be desired and these paintings look much better in person!  So, come see them at Artistree Gallery, here in beautiful Woodstock.

1206 Route 12
281 Barnard Road,
Mount Tom Building
Woodstock, VT 05091.

The exhibit runs from Friday, September 28th through Saturday, October 13th, coinciding with the Fall Vermont Open Studios the weekend of October 6th.

The Summer Studio and Gallery

It's been a lot of work but now I think I can say the Summer Studio and Gallery in our barn/garage is just about complete thanks to my dear husband who did all the cutting, nailing and painting!  Thank you, Rick....

We used homosote panels painted dark brown to hold smaller works....

When the doors are open, the space is filed with north light--a perfect spot to finish plein aire paintings....

Smaller, unframed pieces reside in bins....

And I found a great old drawing table at a used furniture store--with a bit of sanding it's perfect....

Just a few more finishing touches and we'll be finished.  Then, we'll have an opening and you're all invited!  If you'd like a personal preview, just email me and we'll set it up!

"Images of Irene"

This Friday, the exhibit "Images of Irene" will open at ArtisTree Community Arts Center and Gallery in Woodstock, VT on route 12 just north of downtown.  I hope if you are in the area on January 6th between 6 and 8 pm, you'll plan to attend the Opening!

This exhibit reflects the work of six community members, myself included, who participated in a photography class lead by Carla Kimball entitled "Telling Our Stories Through New Eyes".  Over the course of seven sessions at ArtisTree, students wove together photography, poetry and stories to chronicle each individual’s experience of Tropical Storm Irene. The exhibit presents both their visual and poetic narratives of the storm.  Through images and poems, the galleries will reflect the personal and universal expressions of Irene and its effect on ourselves, our communities and our land as well as examples derived from the new way of seeing the world through class exercises.

Photographs will be for sale by donation and proceeds will be donated to the Sustainable Woodstock Flood Relief Fund. The exhibition will be available for viewing Tuesday through Saturday, January 7-21st from 11am-2pm or by appointment. For more information about Sustainable Woodstock’s Flood Relief Fund visit www.sustainablewoodstock.org.

I hope that if you can't make it to the Opening on the 6th, you'll be able to visit the exhibit during Gallery hours through January 21st.

Note Cards are finished!

It's been a long time coming but finally I have finished two sets of note cards.  The first is a set of four floral prints....

and the second is a set of pear watercolors....

These images are taken from the pear watercolor and floral print calendars just off the presses.  It is an exciting departure for me--from fine arts into a bit of the commercial!  Hopefully they will be packaged and for sale in the area in the near future....

Plein Aire Paintings at the Chandler in Randolph

Here is an excerpt from Dian Parker's review of the current Area Artists Exhibit at the Chandler Gallery in Randolph, VT where I am exhibiting plein aire paintings.  I am pleased that my painting, "Swimming Hole on Locust Creek" was singled out by her for favorable comment...

REVIEW: 50 Area Artists on Display at the Chandler Gallery in Randolph
Every spring the Chandler Gallery offers an opportunity for area artists to exhibit their work. This year 50 artists display more than 140 pieces of their art in the expanded gallery. You’d think it would be impossible to show that many pieces without the gallery feeling crowded, a mish-mash of art. Instead the show is a wonderful surprise. Not only is the show pleasing as a whole, there are also many different genres of art displayed. To consider each of the artists is not possible so I have selected only a few.

"Swimming Hole on Locust Creek"
12" x 16" - oil

Two landscape artists, Kathleen Fiske and Katherine Ravenhorst-Adams, have 3 paintings each in the show and they alone would be worth the visit. Fiske’s Swimming Hole on Locust Creek, oil, is striking with its meandering stream with sunlight splashing across the water, and when seen from a distance takes on new dimension."
